Partners Now Get Paid on Merchant Sales
On August 10, 2026, Shopify's partner economics change. For every merchant a partner brings to the platform, the payout becomes 20 percent of the subscription fee plus 0.1 percent of the merchant's online sales, for four years, at the same rate for every partner on every plan. For the first time, an agency's income scales with how well its clients' stores sell.
Shopify announced the model on July 7, 2026 and applies it to deals signed or stores transferred on or after August 10, 2026. Everything already launched keeps its existing payout terms. The rules below come from Shopify's announcement and the Partner earning model FAQ, both retrieved August 5, 2026. This is the money side of the program; the status side, the tier ladder from Select to Platinum, is covered in our guide to the partner tiers, and one fact connects the two: the earning rates are identical at every tier. A Platinum badge buys access and credibility, not a better percentage.
The New Terms Against the Old
Which terms apply to a merchant depends on when the referral was submitted, when the store launched, or when the Plus plan started. Existing stores stay on the terms in effect at the time.
| Payout | July 1, 2025 to August 9, 2026 | August 10, 2026 onward |
|---|---|---|
| Basic, Grow, Advanced launch | 20% of subscription fee, perpetual | 20% of subscription fee + 0.1% of net eligible online GMV, 4 years |
| Plus launch | 15% of billed platform fee, perpetual (co-sold) | 20% of subscription fee + 0.1% of net eligible online GMV, 4 years |
| Plus referral | $2,500 one time, net-new only | $2,500 one time, net-new and upgrades |
| POS Payments profit share | 20%, 2 years | 20%, 4 years |
| B2B Payments profit share | Not available | 20%, 4 years |
| Shop Pay off Shopify | Not available | 0.1% of GPV, 1 year |
The headline trade: the old subscription share was perpetual, the new one ends after four years, and in exchange partners earn on GMV. Shopify's own examples put the four-year total at roughly two times the old model for an Advanced merchant ($5,872 vs $2,872 on $750k of annual GMV) and nearly 2.4 times for a sales-assisted Plus merchant ($73,380 vs $30,900 on $10M online plus $2M retail GMV, including POS profit share and the referral bonus).
The Fine Print That Decides Whether You Get Paid
What GMV counts. The 0.1 percent applies to net eligible online GMV: online consumer transactions, net of returns and refunds, excluding B2B, capped at $100M per merchant per year. A merchant processing $1M of eligible GMV in a month pays you $1,000 that month. Starter and Lite plans earn no revenue share at all.
Who counts as the Launch Partner. For partner-led deals, you must have built and transferred the development store. For Plus deals co-sold with Shopify, you must be selected as Launch Partner and hand a signed Statement of Work covering the build or migration to the sales rep before the deal closes. Shopify is explicit that a retainer for marketing or SEO alone does not qualify as an SOW. Advanced-plan sales deals skip the SOW; the share goes automatically to the development partner who transferred the store.
How the $2,500 Plus referral works. Submit the lead through the Partner Dashboard before the merchant is in contact with Shopify Sales, a co-sold deal must open within 30 days, the contract must close as Plus or Enterprise, and the merchant must clear $5,000 in net GMV. Upgrades of existing merchants now qualify, which they did not before August 10. If you built the store originally, you keep your ongoing revenue share through the upgrade; if you only referred the upgrade, you get the $2,500 and no ongoing share.
When the money moves. The four-year term starts with the first partner payment, and the revenue-share clock starts after the merchant pays their first invoice, with a 30-day hold on the first payout. Payouts run twice a month once a balance passes $25. Expansion stores carry no subscription share, but from August 10 they earn the 0.1 percent GMV share for the partner who launched them.
Four Earning Targets, Worked Through
What does it take to build a real income on these rates? The math below uses three stated assumptions: an Advanced subscription at roughly $299 a month on annual billing (the figure implied by Shopify's own $5,872 example), a Plus subscription starting near $2,500 a month, and a steady-state book where every merchant is inside its four-year term, which means sustaining launches at one quarter of the book size per year. Per merchant, per year:
| Merchant profile | Subscription share | GMV share | Total per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advanced, $1.5M online GMV | ~$720 | $1,500 | ~$2,200 |
| Plus, $5M online GMV | ~$6,000 | $5,000 | ~$11,000 |
| Plus, $10M online GMV | ~$6,000 | $10,000 | ~$16,000 |
| Plus, $25M online GMV | ~$6,000 | $25,000 | ~$31,000 |
| Plus, $100M online GMV (the cap) | ~$6,000 | $100,000 | ~$106,000 |
$100,000 a year. Nine active Plus merchants averaging $5M GMV gets there ($99k), sustained by two to three Plus launches a year. The volume route needs about 45 active Advanced merchants at $1.5M GMV, roughly 11 launches a year, every year. Same income, five times the delivery load, which is the new model's quiet argument for moving upmarket.
$250,000 a year. Sixteen active Plus merchants at $10M GMV ($256k), sustained by four Plus launches a year. For scale: four Plus or Enterprise deals in two years is the Premier tier's acquisition floor, so an agency running this book at twice that pace is comfortably inside Premier territory on the deal minimum.
$500,000 a year. Sixteen active Plus merchants at $25M GMV ($496k), four launches a year at a materially larger client size, or 31 merchants at $10M with eight launches a year. Either version exceeds the Platinum tier's deal pace of three Plus/Enterprise wins a year.
$1,000,000 a year. A mixed book: 20 Plus merchants at $25M ($620k) plus 24 at $10M ($384k) is 44 active enterprise-grade merchants and roughly 11 launches a year, sustained. The shortcut version is a handful of merchants near the $100M cap at ~$106k each. Books like these belong to the 122 Platinum-scale agencies in the top-tier directory, and the referral bonuses, POS, B2B, and Shop Pay shares stack on top of every scenario above.
Two honest caveats on all four scenarios. Merchant GMV is the biggest variable and the least controllable; the same 16-client book earns half as much if the clients sell half as well. And the four-year expiry means none of this is an annuity: the book must be refilled at a quarter of its size annually or the run rate decays.
The Strategic Shift: Your Clients’ Sales Are Now Your Revenue Line
Under the old model, a partner's Shopify income was fixed the day the store launched: the subscription share paid the same whether the merchant thrived or stalled. From August 10, every point of merchant growth pays the partner directly. An agency whose clients grow from $5M to $10M in GMV doubles the GMV half of its Shopify income without signing a single new deal.
That changes what post-launch work is worth. Traffic, conversion, and increasingly AI visibility, whether a store gets cited by ChatGPT, surfaces in Google's AI results, and survives agentic checkout, now flow straight into the partner's own payout. This is the work WISLR does alongside agency teams: we measure which LLMs crawl, cite, and send buyers to a storefront from server logs, fix the schema and rendering layer AI retrieval depends on, and protect visibility through replatforms and migrations. Under the new model, a GEO engagement that lifts a client's GMV is not just a client win; it compounds into the agency's 0.1 percent. If your book is about to live on merchant performance, that is worth a conversation.
